Lilac
Common lilac bushes (Syringa vulgaris) are deciduous shrubs that
bloom in the springtime. They are part of the olive family, along with
other such ornamental plants as ash trees, forsythia bushes, and privet
hedges. The outstanding quality of many lilac varieties is the sweet
fragrances of their flowers. (The Spruce)
First first time in 10 years, tribe to have limited fishery on Elwha
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe will conduct a limited fish harvest on the
lower Elwha River this October, the first time the river has been open
to any fishing in more than a decade. The tribe, the state Department of
Fish and Wildlife and Olympic National Park have announced a limited
Tribal Ceremonial and Subsistence Fishery for coho salmon on the lower
three miles of the river. The fishery has been closed to commercial and
recreational fishing since 2011, when dam removal on the river began.

Coastal GasLink ordered to stop work near Prince George for polluting fish-bearing stream
The B.C. government has ordered Coastal GasLink to stop work on a
section of pipeline near Prince George after officials found
sediment-laden water being "pumped into an area that ran into
tributaries of the Anzac River." Betsy Trumpener reports. (CBC)
Federal, Tribal, and State Leaders Launch Puget Sound Federal Leadership Task Force7
[On May 4] the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and
western Washington Tribes kicked-off the first meeting of the Puget
Sound Federal Leadership Task Force, mandated by Congress in 2022 to
coordinate the federal government’s efforts to restore Puget Sound and
address Tribal treaty rights. The legislation creating the task force
was included in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023 and
amended the Clean Water Act to create a Puget Sound Recovery National
Program Office in Washington state. (US Army Corps of Engineers)

Committee on Geographic Names Approves Three Tribal Proposals to Replace Derogatory Names
The Washington State Committee on Geographic Names approved five names,
including new names submitted by tribes for three places that previously
bore a term derogatory to Native American women, during its meeting
