Dam owner pleads guilty after spilling turf, tire bits in Puyallup River
The head of a hydropower company has pleaded guilty after putting two football fields’ worth of artificial turf in the Puyallup River in Pierce County. The Washington Attorney General’s office is recommending that Electron Hydro and owner Thom Fischer pay a $1 million penalty for a misdemeanor violation, with most of the money going to help restore the river. Tacoma pioneer of politics put environmental justice on the map in Washington state
Tacoma named a park in her honor last February for Black History month, but still relatively few people seem to know much about Tacoma resident Rosa Franklin. She was the first African American woman to serve in the Washington state Senate and the first African American woman in the United States to be voted senate president pro tempore by her peers. Era ends with sale of Lovrić’s Sea-Craft of Anacortes     
Lovrić’s Sea-Craft of Anacortes, a landmark 58-year-old marina and shipyard on Guemes Channel, was sold in mid-February to Stabbert Marine and Industrial (SMI) of Seattle. President and CEO Dan Stabbert said the shipyard will specialize in vessel refit, repair and maintenance, and the marina has been named Guemes Channel Marina. Richard Arlen Walker reports. No Sidney-Anacortes ferry for at least seven years
Washington State Ferries, which has been dealing with a shortage of both vessels and crew, says its boat-building plans won’t allow for resumption of the service until 2030 at the earliest. (Times Colonist)

PNW basket maker Ed Eugene Carriere named NEA National Heritage Fellow
Suquamish basket maker Ed Eugene Carriere has been named a 2023 National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts, recognizing the Indianola, Kitsap County, resident with a lifetime honor for his dedication to the preservation and artistic growth of cultural traditions. Carriere, one of nine honorees announced Tuesday morning, will receive a $25,000 award. Jerald Pierce reports. (Seattle Times)

Rare White Dungeness Caught off N. Oregon Coast is 1 in a Million
The term “one in a million” is thrown around quite a bit, but in this case – on the north Oregon coast – it is no hyperbole at all. Seaside Aquarium recently acquired a rare white Dungeness crab, which is literally a chance of one in a million. (Oregon Coast Beach Connection)

$5.5 million awarded to improve Puget Sound shellfish habitats
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has awarded a total of $5.5 million to 11 proposed projects that aim to restore and protect shellfish habitats across Puget Sound. Awardees were chosen by DOH’s Shellfish Strategic Initiative Advisory Team using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Puget Sound Geographic Funds. (DOH News Release)
