The sablefish is a species of deep-sea fish common to the North Pacific Ocean. The sablefish is found in muddy sea beds The US Food and Drug Administration accepts only "sablefish" as the acceptable market name in the United States; "black cod" is considered a vernacular (regional) name and should not be used as a statement of identity for this species. Sablefish are found at depths of 300 to 2,700 m (980 to 8,860 ft) and is commercially important to Japan.

The cost of a controversial B.C. pipeline keeps rising, leading to plunging share prices
North American pipeline operator TC Energy Corp on Wednesday raised its cost estimate more than expected for completing its troubled Coastal GasLink project, sending share prices sharply lower. TC Energy says Coastal GasLink price now projected at $14.5B, up from $11.2B as construction delayed. The company attributed the cost increase to a labour shortage, poor work by contractors and adverse weather. TC's Toronto-listed shares fell 6.5 per cent and have lost 18 per cent since the company warned in November that Coastal's costs were increasing.  Arshreet Singh and Rod Nickel report. Forestry industry sustainable management claim questioned
The Competition Bureau has opened an inquiry to see if forestry industry claims of sustainable management on vast stretches of Canadian woodlands are false advertising. The inquiry, announced late last year, comes in response to a complaint filed by the environmental law firm Ecojustice on behalf of eight environmental groups. Ecojustice says that forest industry ads claiming the Sustainable Forestry ­Initiative sets rigorous ­harvesting ­standards are dishonest and ­misleading. Bob Weber reports. (Canadian Press)

Depot opens on North Island to collect marine debris
The 7-Mile Landfill on Highway 19 between Port McNeill and the Port Alice Junction accepts fishing gear and marine debris such as netting and rope, polystyrene foam, hard plastics and select buoys. Darron Kloster reports. (Times Colonist)

Foundation funds salmon projects on south Island
The Pacific Salmon Foundation is supporting 48 community-led projects aimed at enhancing wild salmon and their habitats in B.C., including seven on southern Vancouver Island. The non-profit foundation is distributing $227,828 to projects that include teaching children about the life cycles of salmon, cleaning up environments used by salmon and supporting hatcheries.
