Largemouth bass [Bill Evans/WDFW] |
Largemouth bass is a member of the sunfish family, though larger than those species considered "panfish". Together with six other species of bass, they make up the group typically known as the black basses. Other than the largemouth, the only other member of the black basses in Washington is the similar looking smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu. Largemouth bass average 12-15 inches and can grow to 17-20+ inches. The Washington state record is a 12.53 lb fish caught by Bill Evans [pictured] in Lake Bosworth in 2016, breaking a 39-year record. The Trump Administration Is Reversing Nearly 100 Environmental Rules. Here’s the Full List
After three years in office, the Trump administration has dismantled most of the major climate and environmental policies the president promised to undo. Calling the rules unnecessary and burdensome to the fossil fuel industry and other businesses, his administration has weakened Obama-era limits on planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and from cars and trucks, and rolled back many more rules governing clean air, water and toxic chemicals. Several major reversals have been finalized in recent weeks as the country has struggled to contain the spread of the new coronavirus. Nadja Popovich, Livia Albeck-Ripka and Kendra Pierre-Louis report. (NY Times)
Coronavirus: UK warned to avoid climate change crisis
The UK must avoid lurching from the coronavirus crisis into a deeper climate crisis, the government’s advisers have warned. They recommend that ministers ensure funds earmarked for a post-Covid-19 economic recovery go to firms that will reduce carbon emissions. They say the public should work from home if possible; and to walk or cycle. And investment should prioritise broadband over road-building, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) says. People should also be encouraged to save emissions by continuing to consult GPs online. Roger Harrabin reports. (BBC)
'Quieter ocean' from COVID-19 could be a boon to endangered orcas, say researchers
The southern resident killer whales who spend their summers in the waters of the Salish Sea are listed as endangered with just 73 members left, and are facing a triple threat from pollution, a lack of food and marine noise caused by humans. That third factor, however, has all but disappeared during the pandemic. Simon Little and Linda Aylesworth report. (GlobalNews.Com)
Editorial: No oil-tanker storage on Puget Sound
Puget Sound must not be used for floating oil storage, which increases the risk of a devastating spill. Puget Sound is an environmentally sensitive area and critical to the survival of multiple endangered species. (Seattle Times)
