When 16-year-old environmental activist Sam Harrison made a presentation last week at the Vancouver hearings into the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, he had one goal in mind: to make the case that this pipeline represents a fundamental betrayal to his generation. “The Arctic will melt; the world will experience the next mass extinction,” he said during the review panel. “My generation will have to deal with the consequences. Surely, your generation owes it to us to not make it worse.” Teen activist strikes nerve with statement to pipeline hearing

B.C. government lawyers grilled representatives of Enbridge on the company's emergency response plan at hearings Tuesday in Prince Rupert on the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.. At issue were definitions of what constitutes world-class safety standards. The provincial government has said that it requires such standards for heavy oil transport, both on land and water. B.C. has asked for assurance that Canada's standards match or exceed what's in place in other jurisdictions, such as Alaska and the state of Washington. Enbridge grilled on pipeline safety

Oil and gas giant BP's profit fell nearly 80 percent in the fourth quarter in results released Tuesday, dragged down by payouts related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. BP said that net profit fell to $1.62 billion in the three months ending Dec. 31, down from $7.69 billion in the same period the year before. BP took a loss of $3.85 billion for its settlement of all federal criminal charges with the U.S. government.
