Warning issued about deadly mushrooms ahead of Thanksgiving weekend
As fall brings wetter conditions that foster the growth of mushrooms, the B.C. Centre for Disease control is warning people to beware of the poisonous death cap mushroom which can be fatal if ingested. The species Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the death cap mushroom, is a poisonous and grows in urban and forested areas. If consumed, the mushroom can lead to liver and kidney damage from dangerous toxins and, in some cases, death. Symptoms of death cap mushroom poisoning include low blood pressure, nausea, abdominal pain, dehydration and vomiting which can begin within six to 12 hours after eating. (CBC)

Canada’s Supreme Court to consider whether Native Americans in U.S. have rights north of the border
It was a frosty October morning when Richard Desautel aimed his Mauser 98 bolt-action rifle at a cow elk in the Arrow Lakes area of British Columbia, shot the animal dead and phoned wildlife conservation officers to report what he’d done. That call, made a decade ago this month, set into motion a plan that was years in the making. Authorities charged Desautel, a U.S. citizen and member of the Lakes Tribe of the Colville Confederated Tribes in Washington state, with hunting without a license and hunting big game while not a resident of British Columbia. It was what Desautel wanted. It gave him the opportunity to argue that he was exercising his right under Canada’s constitution to hunt for ceremonial purposes on the traditional land of his ancestors, the Sinixt, an Indigenous group that Canada declared extinct more than 60 years ago. Amanda Coletta reports. (Washington Post)

Multiple wildlife species being managed to zero, BCWF says
B.C.’s spending on wildlife and habitat protection has declined by 65 per cent over the past 20 years as wild populations of caribou and endangered runs of steelhead and salmon plumb new lows, according to an analysis by the B.C. Wildlife Federation. Successive NDP and Liberal governments have failed to reverse those trends, despite reassurances given in past election campaigns, said spokesman Jesse Zeman. Randy Shore reports. (Vancouver Sun)
